Your BrightNods and you
Hello! This page tells you what BrightNods keeps about you. It also says who can see it. Read it with a grown-up. You can ask them anything about it.
1. What BrightNods remembers
When you play, BrightNods remembers:
- your first name, or a nickname;
- your school year, and the month and year you were born;
- your answers, your scores, and the questions you found tricky;
- a quiz you stop part-way, so you can carry on;
- the faces you pick to show how a topic felt;
- your points, stars and streaks;
- the stickers you choose, and your pet's name and animal;
- your working out, if you draw it;
- stickers and messages your grown-up sends about your working out;
- your spelling words and homework practice, if a grown-up adds them.
It remembers these things to pick the right questions for you. That helps you get better.
BrightNods also uses your answers to pick your next questions. If something is tricky, it gives you more practice.
2. Your grown-up can see your results
Your grown-up can see how you are doing. They can see your scores and your answers. They can see the questions you got wrong. They can see the faces you picked. They can see your working out, if you draw it. They can send you a sticker or a kind message about it. They pick it from a list. They can send it from their own phone too.
Your grown-up can turn on a message. The message tells them when a topic is tricky for you.
They look so they can help you learn. You will see a little sign in the app. It says "Your grown-up can see how you're doing." Tap it to find out more.
3. Who else can see your results
Sometimes your grown-up turns on family sharing. Then other grown-ups they choose can see your results too.
They might be:
- your other parent or carer;
- a grandparent or another grown-up in your family;
- your own iPad or iPhone, if you have one.
They can see your name and the year you were born. They can see your scores, your answers and your points. They can see the questions you got wrong. They can see the faces you picked. They can see your working out too, if your grown-up says yes. They only see it once you finish the quiz. They can send you a sticker or a kind message about it too. They can change things too, like your practice set. They do not see the month you were born.
A brother or sister may have their own iPad in family sharing. If so, your results are kept on it too. So is your working out, if it is shared.
When family sharing is on, the little sign changes. It says "Your grown-ups can see how you're doing". It also shows who they are.
BrightNods does not show your results to anyone else. Not the people who made BrightNods. Not children at school. Not strangers. There are no adverts.
4. The camera
The camera is for grown-ups. A grown-up can take a photo of your spelling list. Or a photo of your homework sheet.
BrightNods reads the words on your iPad or iPhone. Then the photo is thrown away. It is not kept and it is not sent to anyone. Only the words are kept, so you can practise them.
BrightNods does not need photos of you. It does not keep any photos.
5. Saying or writing your answer
Your grown-up can turn on talking answers. Then you can say your answer out loud instead of typing.
- The microphone only listens when you press the microphone button.
- Your iPad or iPhone turns what you say into words.
- Your voice is not kept. It is not sent anywhere.
- Only the words go in the answer box.
You do not have to use the microphone. You can always type instead.
You can also write your answer with your finger. Your iPad or iPhone reads your writing. Only the words go in the answer box. Your writing is not kept.
6. Where your things are kept
Your things are kept on your iPad or iPhone.
Your grown-up can turn on iCloud. Then a copy is also kept in your family's iCloud. iCloud is Apple's storage on the internet. It helps your family's iPads and iPhones match. Your points and stickers go there too. Your pet does not. It stays on your iPad or iPhone.
If you draw your working out, the app keeps it. Your grown-up can see it. Your family can see it too, if your grown-up says yes. Then it goes through your family's iCloud when you finish the quiz. A sticker your grown-up sends from their phone comes the same way. It is not copied to the backup.
Your iPad or iPhone may make a backup (a spare copy). Then your BrightNods things are in the backup too. Your working out is not.
How long are your things kept? Until your grown-up deletes them. Your working out is deleted by itself after 60 days. The people who made BrightNods do not have a copy.
Your grown-up may delete the BrightNods app. Then your things go from your iPad or iPhone. But the copy in iCloud stays. If BrightNods comes back, your things can come back too. Your grown-up can delete the iCloud copy as well.
Your grown-up may send us an email. We keep it for 6 years. That is in case we need to look again. Then we delete it.
7. If you want something deleted
You can ask for things to be deleted. That can be your answers, your scores, or everything about you.
Ask your grown-up. They can delete things in the grown-ups' part of the app. It is your information, so you can ask.
Your grown-up may delete your family's BrightNods. Then your grown-up can tell Apple that BrightNods should stop using their sign-in. They do this in the Settings app. BrightNods does not send your name, answers or scores to Apple.
You can also ask your grown-up:
- to show you what BrightNods keeps about you;
- to fix something that is wrong, like your name;
- to turn off family sharing, or talking answers.
8. If you are worried
Does anything in BrightNods worry you or make you sad? It might be a sticker or a message. It might be something else. Stop and tell a grown-up you trust.
Your grown-up can tell us about it at [[OWNER: support email]]. We will help. Your grown-up can tell us in the grown-ups' part of the app too.
Are you or your grown-up unhappy with how we look after your information? Then you can also tell the Information Commission. Their job is to make sure companies look after people's information. Your grown-up can find out how in our Privacy Notice.
9. Remember

- Your voice and your writing are not kept.
- Your things stay on your family's devices. They go to iCloud too, if your grown-up turns it on.

Thank you for reading! Now let's go and learn something.
For grown-ups: this page explains our Privacy Notice for children. It is not a contract. The Privacy Notice has the full details. They include your child's rights, how to delete the iCloud copy, and how to complain.
